b>RRP Production Research Herd Transferred to Stevens Village
On August 26th, 27th, and 28th, the Reindeer Research Program transferred the remaining 35 reindeer of it's production research herd from the UAF AFES farm to Stevens Village Alaska. The production research herd had existed at the AFES facility for 22 years having been established in 1997. The production research herd was used for many research projects that could not be accomplished with the free ranging herds on the Seward Peninsula, as well as in combined projects comparing free ranging reindeer production to the production of reindeer behind fences fed with various Alaska grown feed components.
Rodger, the current outreach reindeer along with Olivia are the only reindeer currently at the AFES farm, but they will be moving to the Large Animal Research Station soon.

Name our 2019 Calves!
The Reindeer Research Program has some expecting reindeer cows and several calves have already been born so far in 2019. Reindeer calves are generally born in April and May.
We generally give the mother and calf 12-24 hours to form a strong bond before we tag and weigh the newborn. If we process the calf too soon we risk
the reindeer cow abandoning her calf. If we wait too long, the calf becomes very mobile and it could be very stressful catching it to tag and weigh.
Once a calf is tagged, its information is entered into our database and it will show up on the calf watch list.
